This was the first ever Southwest Lake Flyers Summer Splash-In at Lake Mead.  What fun this was meeting up with old friends and sharing time and conversation. It was a very nice morning. We got to talk to some other Lake Mead visitors about our planes, answer questions, have a few refreshments. Just a great time.

I'll say it over and over, I love my Lake. I just can't see owning any other plane.

There are a lot of places to visit from this location. I am fortunate to have my Lake hangared so close to Lake Mead and the Colorado river.  On below Hoover dam there are several spots to visit. Lake Mohave just below the dam. A little further south and you're in Laughlin Nevada. Play on the river or just park your Lake at Bullhead City & catch a free ride over to the casinos for some food and fun. The month of March Laughlin has a Blues Fest.  My wife and I happened to catch this event this year. If you like being outdoors with live blues and food and drink, it doesn't get much better than this.

A little further on down the river is a nice little place called Avi Resort & Casino. This is a real nice place to visit as well. I have landed on the river here and taxied into a cove that they have built. It is big enough for several Lakes at once. A nice sandy beach with grass hut type umbrellas all around. There is a water front snack & drink bar as well. Oh, I just learned they have a boat ramp you can drive out on as well. I haven't tried this yet opting to beach instead.

If you want to you can travel on down south and hit Lake Havasu. I have been here a couple of times. It is a pretty busy lake though. Lots of boat traffic.

Let any of us know if you want to join us for the next Southwest Lake Flyers Splash-In.   Don Lewellen

Here’s a UK registered LA-4-180 pictured on Lough Erne, at Lusty Beg Island, just a mile from Castle Archdale, the famous WWII home to Sunderlands and Catalinas.

This pic shows the first ever seaplane visit to Lusty Beg Island.

We started a business Air Whitsunday in April 1973 with one Lake VH-ETY. This aircraft is shown on the beach at Happy Bay, Long Island, Whitsunday, Great Barrier Reef, Australia (1st-Lake-QLD-1973).

Over the next two years the business grew to three Lakes (Happy Bay 1975). This was the limit we could accommodate at the Happy Bay site, so we moved to the local airstrip at Airlie Beach in 1978 and by 1982 we had a fleet of five Lakes.

These operated in flights of up to the whole five aircraft taking visitors out to the Great Barrier Reef, where we would alight in a lagoon and transfer to small boats for coral viewing and snorkling.

When it was really busy we would run a shuttle services with each aircraft doing up to five return trips a day. The flight time was 25 mins each way. We had a crew of fourteen pilots.
